About Us
Market access is opening, maintaining and expanding markets. It is fundamental for the success of agriculture in Alberta. Canada’s agriculture industry largely depends on international trade, and Alberta is Canada’s second largest international exporter of agri-food products. Alberta’s primary export commodities are wheat, live cattle, canola seed, beef and pork.

To access many retail and export markets, it is essential for food processors to demonstrate their implementation of robust food safety systems. The Food Safety Branch (FSB) monitors international food safety requirements to help prepare the farm producers and food processing industry retain or gain market access (e.g. US Food and Drug Administration’s Food Safety Modernization Act). FSB also provides financial and scientific support on safe food production to enable market access both locally and internationally.
